Creativity +

Do you ever feel a little less creative than you wish you were? Maybe the person next to you is just killin' the crafty game. They are witty and quick to discover; they move with passion in artistic stuff and even life stuff.

I get it. I have been around people where I feel completely dry of inspiration and ideas simply because they seem like the hottest new minds of our time. I can't freakin' compete with them...

+ + +

I love reading the Psalms. I probably read them everyday, no lie. I just can't get enough of the poetic form of giving praise to God and the reality that is spoken about.

One thing that I noticed today was verse 9 of Psalm 144. It says, "My God, I will sing you a brand-new song! The harp inside my heart will make music to you!"

I love how at least seven times in the Psalms, David talks about singing a new song unto the Lord.

A new one. Not an old one, not a song that's already been sung, but a new song.

The word new in the Hebrew literally means new and fresh.

It's crazy to me that God has created every human with a new song to sing, a fresh song to praise with.

In the moments where I feel my least on the creativity spectrum, I must have hit my head on a rock and forgotten about who God is.

The Creator made humans as beings that are able to continually produce a new song to Him.

There is a liberation that occurs when we realize that He has created us to forever create.

Even in the book of Revelation we see the elders singing a new song to the Lord. I can't help but think that we are supposed to be just as involved as David and the elders in this. We are also called to bring about a new song from our hearts to God.

I think the most beautiful factor here though is that this song is not something that is so much required as it desired.

God doesn't require us to sing a new song unto Him but He DESIRES a new song from us. As lovers, He wants our hearts to be so captivated by Him, that we can't help but to sing the things that have never been sung.

And because God is a boss, He created us with the ability to fulfill the desires He has.

He doesn't look at us and say, Gosh, I wish these people could sing a new song, but man, I forgot to craft that inside of them when I made them...

In fact, He has given us everything we need to produce and continually produce something fresh and lovely. Ephesians 2:10 says, "We have become his poetry, a re-created people that will fulfill the destiny he has given each of us, for we are joined to Jesus, the Anointed One. Even before we were born, God planned in advance our destiny and the good works we would do to fulfill it!"

SO, if you have been caught up in the, dang, I suck and I wish I was as creative as that dude. Quit that. Stop whining and step into the creativity that is within you.

If at one time you felt more creative and now you've come to struggle with it, I would consider asking yourself some questions.

  • "Have I used my creativity for my own gain and not to praise the Lord?"
  • "Did I become stagnant in my creativity because of pride in what I once had?"
  • "Have there been times where I have crept into comparison instead of just singing the song God has put inside of me?"
  • "Did I get caught up and not take the time to surrender my creativity in seasons of advancement?"

Whatever it is that you've witnessed yourself walk through as far as creativity, remember that God has placed so much inside of you.

You're not lacking anything, in fact the Lord has created us all to bubble over with the fresh things within us for His satisfaction.

No one was created with a better song, or more of an ability to sing a new song. We are all able and all called to live in His creativity. Embrace what He has already instilled inside of you.
